Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
ZAP Custom Lure Co. was first licensed in 1971; and has been in business for the last 40+ years. In 2000, we merged the 'Original Parrish Lure Co.' (est.1951) into our company; and began producing their entire original product-line of Lake Erie Walleye Lures. Except for adding a few new colors; all four styles of the "Original PARRISH Lures", remain basically unchanged from their original versions.
What is your primary product or service?
We manufacture ZAP Lures & PARRISH Lures products; (2-styles of spinnerbaits; 9-styles of buzzbaits; 6-styles of weight-forward spinners; & 9-styles of jigs) along with tackle & accessory-items, for; Bass, Walleye, Crappie, Perch, and Northern Pike.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I spent almost 23 years as a Bass & Walleye tournament-fisherman; the last eight of them, as a professional. During the first five years I fished tournaments, I couldn't find lures that worked exactly the way I wanted & needed them to. The only solution I could imagine, was to learn how to make my own lures! I learned how to make my lures from some of the best lure-mechanics & manufacturers in the industry. When I began, my lures were made only for my own use. That soon evolved into making custom-lures, for other tournament & avid weekend anglers, throughout the country.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
ALL of our LURES are 100% Made-in-the-USA (in Toledo,OH to be exact); using only 100% US-Made component-parts.
"Top-Shelf", American-Made fishing-products, and reasonable prices! ~ THAT's what we offer our customers!
We're still the only fishing-lure maunfacturer, anywhere; that guarantees every lure we sell, for as long as the original purchaser owns it.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have ONE location, and no immediate plans to expand further.
Provide detailed directions to your location
We're located on Upton Avenue; north of Sylvania & south of Tremainsville.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept: CASH; personal or business checks; and VISA, MasterCard, and Discover credit-cards.
Which areas do you service?
We specialize in making lures for the Great Lakes area. But, we now sell our products worldwide.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Dennis Bryant, a native of Toledo; is the owner/founder.
What are your hours of operation?
Mid-May thru February, our store-hours are 8 AM to 6 PM ~ Monday thru Saturday. ~
March 1st thru mid-May (during the Springtime Walleye-Run) we can be found at our mobile sales-location ~ inside the Side-Cut MetroPark ~ on the Bluegrass Island channel. We're there for the "Walleye-Run", six days a week (Tuesday thru Sunday) ~ from a half-hour before dawn, until 6 in the evening.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
