How long have you been in business?
Carruth Studio was founded in 1983 & Garden Smiles has resided in its current location since 1995. Most people do not realize that Garden Smiles is an outgrowth of the studio where we ship to well over a 1500 shops across the nation.
What is your primary product or service?
George Carruth is a sculptor. He creates wonderful designs originally sculpted in stone & clay, which we cast in stone. They are weatherproof and are purchased both for outdoor display as well as indoor enjoyment, making wonderful gifts. We also offer artwork from many other talented artists. The artwork offered includes handmade jewelry, glass, wind chimes, home decor, garden benches, birdbaths, ornaments & Christmas designs, nativities, inspirational plaques, humorous plaques, handmade pottery, aprons and more.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
George has a degree in advertising and illustration from Columbus College of Art & Design, but was always a sculptor at heart. In 1980 he was hired by American Greetings as a sculptor. In his free time he carved stone by the lake in Cleveland and eventually began offering them for sale. When approached by David Kay Garden & Gift Catalog in 1985 to put handcarved pieces in the catalog, George entered the world of casting his work and Carruth Studio as it is known today, was born. Carruth Studio is recognized worldwide for its attention to detail and its marketing ability.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
As mentioned above, George's ability to capture detail sets him apart. Garden Smiles offers the complete collection of George's work along with "factory seconds". Additionally we offer a wonderful selection of artwork for the home and garden not readily found in this area. The majority of our gifts offered are made in the USA.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have our one shop, Garden Smiles, in Waterville as well as an online catalog found at carruthstudio.com George's work is sold to over 1500 shops across the country as well as in catalogs such as Signals and Femail Creations.
